Acresso in ITKnowledgeExchange: License management could be the key to your next Oracle review

In a news story that appeared on SearchOracle.com last week about Oracle’s acquisition of Sun triggering reviews of software licenses and audits, it hammered home the point to us that IT shops more than ever need to establish best practices for managing software licenses.

Oracle has always had the right to call for a review (with very little notice, I might add) to verify that users have not downloaded more copies than their contract calls for. But the Sun acquisition, coupled with the crushing effect the economy has had on Oracle’s revenue growth, the likelihood of reviews and audits has risen considerably.

Intel Co-founder Moore Looks Back on a Legendary IT Career

Computer History Museum News: Since Dr. Gordon E. Moore helped start two important semiconductor makers, Fairchild and Intel, information technology has evolved a hundredfold. Most of that development is due to the successful implementation of the silicon-based integrated processor: squeezing down transistors, resistors and other elements into smaller and smaller forms onto silicon wafers.

ShoreTel in CNET: SF Giants bring new tech out to the ballpark

Could changing phone systems pay a big-league baseball player’s salary? To hear Bill Schlough, the CIO of the San Francisco Giants tell it, the answer is a definite yes.

Last winter, the team migrated to a new $1 million-plus VoIP telecommunications system from ShoreTel for its ballpark, AT&T Park, abandoning its legacy system, which–ironically–was provided by AT&T. According to Schlough, the old system cost $490,000 annually, while the new setup for the 457 phones at the ballpark run the team just $135,000 a year.

“The integrated circuit turns 50

Computer History Museum News: On Friday the IEEE unveiled a plaque commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first practical IC, which was created at Fairchild’s original building at 844 Charleston Road in Mountain View (it’s just off San Antonio Road near 101). The plaque was unveiled by Margaret Abe-Koga, the mayor of Mountain View who wasn’t even born back then.

The story of the founding of Fairchild is pretty well known. Shockley invented the transistor at Bell Labs in New Jersey (for which he eventually won the Nobel prize in physics) and then moved to California to commercialize it. This was truly the founding of Silicon Valley.

“The integrated circuit turns 50

Computer History Museum News: Friday night in Mountain View, CA hundreds of people gathered at the Computer History Museum to honor the birthday of the integrated circuit, an event which has transformed society.

The birthday party was for the IC itself, for the men that attended its birth, and for the changes that it has made in our society during the last fifty years. The evening was opened by museum CEO John Hollar, speaking about the impact of the integrated circuit. Hollar said, “It became the electronics technology through which we have created our contemporary digital world. It is indispensable to modern life.

“Toasting the birthday of the integrated circuit

Computer History Museum News: Like any good 50th birthday party, Friday night’s soiree included wine, hors d’oeuvres, and a gathering of old friends toasting a half century of fond memories and achievements. But as the event wore on at the Computer History Museum here, it became clear that with a birthday of this magnitude, it was hard to overstate the impact of the integrated circuit not just on the technology industry, but on modern society.

It was in 1959 that the men of Fairchild Semiconductor first created the planar integrated circuit. On Friday, two of the most famous surviving men of that team, Gordon Moore and Jay Last, were feted by 400 friends, former colleagues, and fans for their roles in creating the modern structure of the integrated circuit that today powers everything from the pocket-size iPhone to Google’s giant server farms.

The theory of simplicity

Simplicity. Leonardo da Vinci described it as “the ultimate sophistication, while Albert Einstein said “everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler. More recently, we have been urged to adopt the “kiss principle – “keep it simple, stupid.
