Pentaho featured in Intelligent Enterprise: Enterprise-Grade Hadoop for Petabyte Analytics
Hadoop is riding the hype wave right now. You’ll find many IT professionals who know just enough about Hadoop to be dangerous in a cocktail party setting, but not enough for their own comfort to respond to grilling from the chief technology officer or the geekier business executives.
If you’re slightly bewildered by all the buzz over this new technology with the funny-sounding moniker, you’re not alone. The official story is that Hadoop was the name of the inventor’s kid’s stuffed elephant. However, for most IT professionals, it could easily be an acronym for “Heck, Another Darn Obscure Open-source Project.” The fact that Hadoop, managed by Apache, includes subprojects with similarly opaque names–such as Pig, Hive, Chukwa, and ZooKeeper—contributes to the queasy feeling that this is an untamed menagerie of squealing beasties.

Pentaho featured in SD Times: Lower the cost of Business Intelligence with Open Source
Many of the top reasons given for the use of open source business intelligence software are “lower costs.” The question is whether commercial open source actually matters when it comes to lowering license and support costs. How real are cost savings? How much does BI software and ongoing support actually cost? A new analyst report, Lowering the Cost of Business Intelligence with Open Source, by Mark Madsen of Third Nature research and consulting firm, compares the software and support costs of traditional BI vendors with commercial open source BI from Pentaho.

Pentaho featured in Enterprise Storage Forum: Hadoop Makes Sense of Lots of Data
Mike Karp, an analyst with Ptak, Noel & Associates, cautions that any kind of open-source software is by its very nature a double-edged sword: Cheap to implement, but often hard to find adequate support, especially in the early stages of adoption.
”Most of where the support would come from, after all, is a group of volunteers; as a result, companies are often nervous about doing open source code with business-critical applications,” said Karp. “The good news, of course, is that these volunteers frequently are often inspired to write great code, and there’s plenty of evidence in the past that open-source projects have achieved great success.”

Pentaho featured in IT Business Edge: The Bifurcation of Business Intelligence
There’s growing tension among proponents of business intelligence solutions as new offerings based on open source software and software-as-a-service solutions gain traction.
A recent worldwide survey of 457 executives conducted by Dresner Advisory Services finds that end users are starting to embrace these offerings, largely because they are simpler to use and can be paid within a department’s budget, but sometimes in spite of the BI standards driven largely by the IT department.

Pentaho featured in Database Trends and Applications: Data Center Trends – The 12 Top Ways Data Management Will Evolve in the 2010s
In only a few years’ time, the world of data management has been altered dramatically, and this is a change that is still running its course. No longer are databases run in back rooms by administrators worrying about rows and columns. Now, actionable information is sought by decision makers at all levels of the enterprise, and the custodians of this data need to work closely with the business.
That’s because, in the wake of the recent financial crisis and economic downturn, there’s a push from both high-level corporate management and regulators to achieve greater understanding and greater transparency across the enterprise, Jeanne Harris, executive research fellow and a senior executive at the Accenture Institute for High Performance, and co-author, along with Tom Davenport, of Competing on Analytics and Analytics at Work, tells DBTA. “In many ways, I think the ultimate result of the financial crisis is that executives realized they cannot delegate analytics to subordinates; they can’t view it as technology or math that doesn’t really affect them.”

Pentaho featured in Information Management: Open Source Makes a Difference
The obvious reason to use open source software is cost savings, says Mark Madsen, president of market research firm Third Nature. But, whether you actually save when it comes to license and support costs is the question among many.
Using public sources and vendor information, Madsen created a Pentaho-sponsored cost comparison report (“Lowering the Cost of Business Intelligence With Open Source), comparing BI software and support costs from Pentaho, IBM (Cognos), MicroStrategy, Oracle and SAP (Business Objects).
Open source does matter, Madsen was quoted to say. “At the entry level with a small number of users, open source can be a little to a lot less expensive. As the environment scales up the difference becomes much more noticeable.
