Vyatta featured on CSO Online: Network Security: Three open-source options
Free and open-source software (FOSS) is everywhere. Its offerings span far and wide in the technology industry. The networking space is an excellent example of FOSS, with feature-packed firewalls, routers, VPNs and even UTMs, for nearly every need. In this article I will introduce you to a few of the commercially-supported open-source network security options currently available in the marketplace today. With open-source networking you can enjoy the benefits of lower costs, greater security, flexibility, extensibility and full enterprise support. Here are three examples.

Vyatta featured in Channel Web: 2010 Emerging Vendors By Technology Sector
While solution providers have found great success getting in on the ground floor of hot new vendors, there’s also an element of risk involved. One wrong move could cost a client.
But today, more than ever, solution providers are taking the plunge, tying products from young vendors into their solution offerings as a key differentiator.

Vyatta featured in CIO Update: The Top 5 Places to Use Virtualization
Common wisdom has it that virtualization is the best course to improve scalability, continuity, performance, and resource efficiency on everything from desktop to servers to storage. In practice, however, that is easier said than done. Part of the difficulty lies in knowing where to start the process and how to contain the risk and where to stay physical.

Vyatta featured on GigaOM/BusinessWeek: “Where Are the Network Virtual Appliances?
Vyatta news: The networking industry is stuck in the 1990s, the last time there was a fundamental shift in commonly deployed network architectures. While servers and applications have gone virtual, migrating into cloud computing environments, networking technologies remain bound to physical hardware and data center racks, creating potential gaps in support or security in virtualized environments. As server virtualization moves into the enterprise and cloud data centers, networking needs to follow with virtual appliances.

Vyatta featured on Network Computing: “Vyatta Announces New 3500 Series Routers
Vyatta news: Vyatta will announce a new 3500 series of open source routers this week that run on the Intel Xeon 5500 “Nehalem” chips and promise bi-directional traffic at up to 20Gbps. Scrappy Vyatta compares the 3500s to Cisco’s ASR 1006s, but it’s doubtful they will take a big bite out of Cisco’s sales any time soon. That said, the new series of routers provides real cost savings to small enterprise customers (users numbering in the hundreds) who can’t afford proprietary options. That’s a serious draw in hard economic times.

Vyatta featured on CNET News: “The yin and yang of system specialization
Vyatta news: Systems are getting more general-purpose. At least in terms of units sold, servers with two x86 processors dominate the landscape.
And it’s more than just servers. For example, on Tuesday Vyatta announced a new series of new network appliances, the Vyatta 3500. These systems, like the other appliances that Vyatta sells, combine standard off-the-shelf x86 server hardware with an integrated software subscription that provides networking functions such as Firewall, VPN, IP address management, administration, diagnostics, and so forth. Vyatta pitches its appliance as a much lower-priced alternative to dedicated networking hardware from the likes of Cisco.

Vyatta in Network World: Vyatta once again discounts to Cisco profit
Open-source thorn in giant’s sandal will slash prices to make up margin
Open-source networker Vyatta is once again offering discounts to customers based on Cisco’s make up margin — the percentage by which Cisco’s profit falls short of 100%. Since Cisco’s profit margin is usually in the mid-60s, Vyatta slashes the price of its appliances and subscriptions in the mid-30s.

Vyatta in ZDnet: Marketing via funny slide show
I just love it when someone comes up with a funny, entertaining way to make their points. Vyatta’s CEO, Kelly Herrell, pointed out a fun slide deck in a recent blog post in which he dissects what the Big Proprietary Networking Vendors wouldn’t say in one fell, slideshow swoop.
If you need a laugh today, you might enjoy reading his blog.

Vyatta in ChannelWeb: 10 Open-Source Developments You Need To Know About
Open Source Meets Virtualization
Vyatta, a developer of open-source networking and network virtualization technologies, is optimizing its open-source router, firewall and VPN software to run in virtualized environments based on Citrix XenServer. The move makes it easier for organizations to use open-source technology to secure and manage network traffic in virtualized and cloud computing environments.
The new capabilities are available now for subscription customers and will be added to a future version of the free community version of Vyatta. The development work follows the announcement in June of a strategic alliance between Vyatta and Citrix to develop open network virtualization for cloud computing environments based on Citrix’s Cloud Center Blueprints. Citrix is also an investor in Vyatta.

Vyatta in LinuxInsider: Boom Time for FOSS
The current economic recession may be pummeling companies around the globe, but amid all the dire reports and grim statistics littering what can only be compared to a bloody battlefield, one oft-cited exception appears to be still standing tall: free and open source software.
That’s what the common discourse seems to suggest, at least, and there’s some anecdotal evidence to support it.
For its fiscal quarter ending May 31, for example, Red Hat (NYSE: RHT)
reported an 11 percent increase in revenue over that earned in the same quarter a year ago. A few months later, it became the first Linux company to join the S&P 500.
More stories of growth can be seen in other FOSS vendors as well — including SugarCRM
and Vyatta, to name just two — even as their counterparts in other sectors have begun to hemorrhage.

Vyatta in CNET: Telecoms are missing their cloud opportunity
For some time now I’ve been advocating to my core network provider customers (and anyone else who would willingly listen) a concept that I think is both central to the future of cloud computing and one of the great opportunities this market disruption presents. The idea is simple: who will be the cloud service aggregator to enterprises, large and small?

Vyatta featured in LinuxInsider: Taking FOSS Security Seriously
Security testing should not be the sole approach to getting better code writing. In fact, security testing should not take the place of good security-focused design techniques, noted Dave Roberts, vice president of strategy for Vyatta. The company develops open source router and security products.

Vyatta featured in Network World: Vyatta discounts on Cisco margin
Vyatta, the open source David to Goliath Cisco, is once again offering discounts based on Cisco’s profit margin. If Cisco reports it usual 64% to 68% profit margin, Vyatta will discount its service and support subscriptions by 36% to 32%.
Not bad, considering Vyatta already claims its networking appliances offer a 75% savings over a Cisco 7200 router. This is a second go around on the profit margin discount, as Vyatta offered the same incentive in May, just after Cisco reported Q3 results.
Cisco reports Q4 next week. The lower the margin, the better the deal from Vyatta.
